  • Can someone give perspective of Wayne's transition to going solo? +other questions

It's crazy to me how this man has a picture with 2pac but had his commercial apex in 2008, really intriguing.

How was the Carter 1 first received?

What were the critiques of him as an artist back then?

Was he ever seen as "the one who will take over rap" when he was just starting, like how Drake was in 2009?

    Is Wayne's biggest influence Jay-Z?

Joe budden recently said that Wayne didn't start to take off into superstar level until he started diversifying his beat selection. How true is this?

Anyone who was old enough to see Wayne's rise, please answer any of these questions. Thanks.

Well Wayne started his solo career on October 23rd, 1999 with the single “Tha Block Is Hot”
That album went on to be Double Platinum

-Go DJ was pretty big on the radio. I feel like it was better for his mainstream success than The Block it Hot, 500 Degrees, or Lights Out

What were the critiques of him as an artist back then?
-Carter 1 days? High pitch voice, just a leftover from Hot Boys, just another southern rapper.

-2006-2007 was when he started taking over. Dedication 2, Carter 2, Drought 3 was when he got in the discussion of best, and CIII put him into the megastar category.

                  Is Wayne's biggest influence Jay-Z?
-Most likely as far as who he wanted to be like in rap

Joe budden recently said that Wayne didn't start to take off into superstar level until he started diversifying his beat selection. How true is this?
-Block is Hot, 500 Degrees, and Lights Out have old school Hot Boys Mannie Fresh production. Mannie produced everything until after Tha Carter, but I like Mannies production on that. After that Wayne started doing a lot more remixes and worked with all different producers.

Thanks a lot for these responses man.

I've never heard that people didn't like Wayne's voice cause it's high pitched, that's interesting to hear.
