It took a few years, but Trey Songz is finally planted at the top of the upper echelon of the R&B ranks. And to think, he really started picking up major steam around this time last year. Truthfully, Anticipation is what got the ball rolling and provided the perfect set up for his highly successful third album, Ready.
From there the native of Petersburg, Va., just saw all the pieces fall in the right place. A somber anthem with Drake (“Successful”), a call to alcoholic arms with “Say Ahh” and a slew of sexually driven records later and Songz is in high demand to say the least. His manager, Kevin Liles, says the singer isn’t going to be stopping any time soon either. In fact, September 14 is even the release date for his new album.
“September 14th, new album. He’s not gonna stop,” Liles said last week during a sit-down with MTV News to promote Def Jam Rap Star. “He’s gonna keep his foot on people’s necks, and he’s going to make sure they understand that we have to redefine R&B. We have to go work hard every single day to be the best.”
At this point, it’s a great call by Liles to keep the gas on the pedal as far as output is concerned. We’ve seen it a thousand times where an artists will get hot only to cool down again after becoming comfortable with their level of success. Liles goes on to say that Trey’s schedule for the next few months is completely booked with another theater tour, the BET Awards and “MTV Unplugged.”
Look for Trey to also be the subject of a new documentary airing on BET on June 27. The program will focus on the The Blueprint 3 Tour from the eyes of Jeezy and Trey Songz and should air directly before the BET Awards.
