LASERS Review
Aight here goes my review for my 2nd most anticipated album of 2011.
1. Letting Go - The opening track for LASERS. Lupe made this track his opening one, which is pretty understandable, He shows us where he's at, mentally and emotionally. As he's been mentioning in interviews and such, He kind of hates his own album. He's loving the music and everything, but not the process of it. He's been having a tough time, and in this song, He raps lines such as "Burdens on my shoulders now burning all my motives down inspiration drying up motivation slowing down" So basically, This track is just him rapping his thoughts, emotions and shit. Loving the track but tbh, I can't stand the chorus, It fits well with the song and everything, But I'm not feeling it, The repeating "Oh wow wow oh" just messed the chorus up for me lol. I give this track 3/5, based on the lyrics, flow and how he delivers his verses. Perfect opening track, If you know the story about this album.
2. Words I Never Said - One of my favorite tracks on the album, This shit is just amazing. Lupe links up with the music industry's new female hook killer, Skylar Grey. Aight so Lupe got this track with Skylar's hook and bridge on it, And it was suppose to be about love, But Lupe had other thoughts on his mind.
So what is he doing on this track? What he's best at. He raps about how the world looks like today, about the government, society and shit. This is Lupe at his FINEST. While listening to these amazing verses, You really can't do much, other than enjoying it. And I know people who might say some shit like " Ehh, he raps about this all the time, he's been doing it for the last couple of years" But this is different, These verses right here shows why he's one of the smartest rappers in the game.
The verses just gets better and better with a strong 1st verse, A stronger 2nd verse, And a 3rd AMAZING verse. Lines as:
"Complain about the liquor store but what you drinking liquor for? Complain about the gloom but when’d you pick a broom up?
Just listening to Pac aint gone make it stop, A rebel in your thoughts, aint gon make it halt"
And the entire 3rd verse, Which I would copy and paste in here, cause it's just too good.
So with amazing lyrics, perfect flow, A banging beat and an amazing hook by Skylar, I give this a strong 5/5. This is my tune right here.
3. Till I Get There - This reminds me of the old Lupe, The beat and vibe of this track is just yelling out " OLD LUPE". He's not speaking on anything particular here, it's just a chill track with a good vibe to it. Lines such as " Fighting for his fans, fighting for his folks, but the boo's from the crowd they become so loud" adds some seriousness into this track, but other than that, It has a great vibe to it. Giving it a 3/5.
4. I Don't Wanna Care Right Now: This is a BANGER. This will probably be the club banger of the album.
Starts of with Lupe laying some FRESH lines, which also shows how he can diverse his flows. There's a few serious lines in this though, and you might not notice it, but you know Lupe, Gotta fill in his message in every song no matter what kind of track it is lmao. MDMA laying a okey hook to it with some techno sound playing during the hook. I haven't really heard Lupe rap like this, and I didn't really expect Lupe to rap with this kind of flow, But I'm totally loving this flow, He knows when he needs to create a hit, and when he needs to be serious. So for people bitching about how he raps about the same things, He gives you a track where he raps about the same shit as the rappers you prefer to listen to, Not only that, But he's doing it better than them. Strong ass 5/5, Been repeating this shit for a good amount of time now lol.
5. Out Of My Head - Featuring Trey Songz. Not feelings this track that much, But it's obviously a track for the ladies, Haven't heard many of these by Lupe. Pretty dope lines, But I'm not feeling Trey nor the track overall. Reminds me of every other rapper/r&b collab, and Lupe is known for not being like other rappers, So this shit sounds.. odd tbh. I give it a 2/5, Pretty weak track.
6. The Show Goes On: 1st Official Single from LASERS, And ohhhh shit, It sure delivers, But after reading a few articles and interviews about Lupe saying how he's disliking the album in one way. He mentioned how this album isn't really HIS album. He's been fighting with Atlantic during a long period, They didn't wanna put out his project last year or some shit. So Lupe started dealing with other shit. "Climbing up Africa's highest mountain for example. But Lupe's fans are one of the most loyal ones out there, They went together, got a petition and shit against Atlantic, and that was the beginning to Lupe's and Atlantic Records meeting, And they gave Lupe a release date. But it's fucked up how they can make tracks, decide the subject and just go to Lupe and say some shit like" Yo we have this track and you have to rap about this and that, And it'll be the 1st Official single of LASERS whether you like it or not. So even if this is a solid track with great a subject about hope and such, Actually, It's an amazing song, But I can't listen to it after hearing the story and process behind it. I give the track a 4/5 though. If there's something like Illuminati out there, He's obviously talking about em during these verses, OR Atlantic Records or some shit.
7. Beautiful Lasers -Starts with MDMA laying another dope hook, Which takes this song to a whole other level. After some heavy repeats on this track , It became my favorite track. Lupe rapping some real deep shit on here, about his life and his dark thoughts, This track pretty much describes how the entire process of making LASERS felt like. The 2nd verse is just one of the best verses I have ever heard. You can really FEEL his pain in this, He raps about how his heart is broken and how "your's" is the one that's been keeping him alive. I have no idea if he's referring to his fans, Or some girl or someone close to him, But I'm guessing the fans? Anyways, This track is just out of this world, Music at its finest. 5/5 NO doubt.
8. Coming Up - Once again, Lupe hooks up with MDMA who lays a catchy hook and bridge to this good feeling track. Like Lupe mentions in the start of the 1st verse, This song goes out to the baby girls.
Like this song, But not my shit. Great track overall though. Loving his flow in the end of the second verse. Anyways, 2/5.
9. State Run Radio - Featuring Matt Mahaffey on the hook, Really NOT feeling the hook, Shit's a mess imo. Lupe's there to save the track with some decent verses with great lyrics, and the track's subject is great, But I'm totally not feeling this and I will probably not listen to this track that much lol. 2/5.
10. Break The Chain - Starts off with Eric Turner laying out a great hook, this shit reminds me of Tempah's " Written In The Starts" Lupe gives this one an amazing start verse, With a MENTALLY ILL flow. Shit's crazy. Loving the verse and subject. Sway tries to keep up but he's got no chance and he's totally lost. I'm not feeling his verse at all. He kinda ruins this track, BUT luckily, Lupe saves this shit and delivers another DOPE verse. Really feeling this track. And his flow here is crazyyyyyy. Loving the end of the last verse " Take this home, Rearrange it, Change it, Danger, Sway-zer, Lupe Laser, Pow!
11. All Black Everything - The track title usually refers to SWAG. But this is Lupe, So it's obviously about something else. This is a dope track, Basically about the black race. This track is one of my favorites, But I got tired of it pretty fast, The replay value ain't that great. Not feeling the production. But Lupe keeps showing the world that he's one of the greatest lyricists out there. With a great message along with great rhymes, you better believe it's dope. 3/5, Would be higher, but the replay value and production fucks it up.
12. Never Forget You - The last track on the album. And maybe the best written one. With a beat that's amazingly good, John Legend sings one of the best hooks on the album. Perfect man for the track. Aight so this one starts pretty great, And when the 1st verse starts, You already know man...
Best written track on the album in my opinion. The track is about memories from his past, childhood and other great memories. Really feeling this track, and it's a perfect way to end the album. The 2nd verse shows why Lupe's one of the most underrated rappers in the game, Of all time, yep.
All around, LASERS is one of my favorite albums of all time. This is his best album, RAPPING wise, The lyrics and flow is just on another level, better than every rapper who's been putting out shit lately.
He shows us that he can kill a club banger with an incredible flow that will make sure you enjoy it, to a mainstream Pop/rap hit single, to a deep and pretty sad track, to whatever's up next. He's got so many flows, and he delivers them #PERFECTLY. But most of the hooks on this album are not good enough. They're not keeping up with the sick verses. Alot of these hooks could have been a lot better, But that's the problem that's stopping this album to being ever greater. And the production on some tracks aren't all that, But this is Lupe's best album, music wise, and lyrical wise. For the people who are bitchin bout how he only raps about the same stuff over and over again, This album is for you and for the fans. And as Lupe said it himself:
" I don’t like the process behind Lasers. The music is dope but I just don’t like the process. We were literally at the point where all this music was done except for a couple songs that we did after the protest. So the bulk of the album was done. And we were talking about shelving the album and going |o anothmr label, that’s(where wm were like, ‘If(you put(the record out,(put it out. Either move(on to another album or kan it and we’ll(do othez record{ at ano|her labml.’ The(busines{ of it oot solvmd. I’m happy foz the fans, this(is theiz album.(This is the album that they fought for and that’s what made me do songs like ‘Words I Never Said’ and ‘All Black Everything.’
I'm totally buying this album, Maybe several times as well.Last edited by YeezyYM; 03-01-2011, 04:45 PM............................................
