Lil Kim reportedly inks deal with Universal Music Group: Are you still a fan of hers?
Lil Kim has reportedly just inked a deal with Universal Music Group.
News that the Brooklyn rapstress was picked up by the same major that currently boasts talents like Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj might come as a surprise to many.
Yes, Kim, along with her former Diddy-led Bad Boy team, ran the late ’90s. Her Hardcore album is considered a classic. But that was then. As of late the has been upstaged and outdone by her peers–namely Minaj, who’s become hip-hop’s leading lady. Oddly enough, rather than embracing Nicki as an upstart, Kim has chosen to make it an ugly competition.
Last November the beef hit the internet when Kim released a diss track claiming Nicki committed identity theft. “That’s cool, I was the first one wit’ it / You’se a Lil Kim wannabe you just hate to admit it / I’m the blueprint you ain’t nothin’ brand new / Check your posters and videos / You’ll always be number two,” she raps on her 2011 Black Friday mixtape cut.
Speaking of that tape, let us not forget the embarrassment that was for her. One, instead of releasing it for free as many rappers do, she forced fans to buy it through PayPal. Then when time came for orders to be shipped, the mixtape was nowhere to be found. Weeks passed before we could hear it. Oh, and once it came in the mail, we regretted buying the dreadful effort.
Obviously, Lil Kim is cold. It’s amazing that anyone with a job to lose in the music business is investing in her. Why risk it? Maybe somewhere over there at UMG knows something we don’t. Maybe Kim, who hasn’t had a solo hit in almost six years, has a smash or two stuffed in her bra cups up her sleeve. Or not.
Requests for official confirmation of Kim’s UMG signing have not been answered yet. But Universal has created an artist page for her on their roster listings.
