Re: 90's Hip-hop Appreciation Thread
I have a little story to tell. Gather round folks.
Last January I went to a Jean Grae concert in London. It was the first time I went to a hip-hop show indoors, that's why I'm telling this. So, one of the opening acts was a DJ (Kid Fury). And it was, literally, one of the best hours of my life. I was one of the first people to enter the building, and the music was already playing. First of all, he was spinning old school, with vinyl, none of that serato/virtual dj bullshit. And second... man, after the show my neck hurt like hell. I couldn't stop nodding my head. Homie played classics, on classics, on classics. All boom-bap from the 90's/early 2000s. He also played 2 songs released in 2012 (His Pain, just to showcase Kendrick's music a lil bit, and Writer's Block, by Brother Ali), and Exhibit C.
Back to the story, in between them classics, he played this one right here:
Then, this mufugga muted the sound at the 1:02 mark, and the entire crowd, including me (but I was not expecting it from EVERYBODY) rapped along "Dead in the middle of Little Italy, little did we know that we riddled two middlemen who didn't do diddly", one of the most famous but, at the same time, somewhat difficult lines of hip-hop history. (obviously, after you try it a couple times you can say it with ease). After this... Nothing else mattered to me. I live for this shit. It just felt... so incredibly good to be surrounded by people that live that hip-hop shit like I do. I haven't met much people like that in my life.
That is all.
Oh, Jean Grae killed that shit. I even appear on a few videos on youtube, jumpin like a little kid in disneyland. She even pointed at me (while I pointed at her) while rapping "You even get that I shoulda said it was 94". Amazing
