well i'm not to sure what the best software is but i use mixcraft. if you look in the official computer thread i posted a link to that software that is crack that is if you don't mind using a torrent

I'd echo what YC said and say mixcraft, it's not too complex and is a good way to get started, plus it has a lot of pro features once you get used to it. Comes with a trial too and there's a few codes lying about to get it free.
