You have to be mindful of the volume levels. Run vocals through an EQ (equalizer) then a compressor. Doing that will give your vocals more punch and will make em stand out better against the instrumental. Then u can tweek it further with delay effects, reverb etc and things typically sound good. Takes some time sitting there tweaking everything, but the end product should sound great.
