Tips on being a better rapping

Okay sorry if this is in the wrong section, I think we should have a separate section for like just Tips/tutorial/ and shit about rapping and home recording and all of that since 'the studio' sub forum is getting pretty big now.

But anyways, I had some questions.

When you rap, are you suppose to like "Push/Strain" your voice, I know obviously your not suppose to talk over a beat and sound all monotone, but like I could never find a flow that I liked, I went from making my voice all "raspyish" and shit to sound like wayne, or sometimes I would kinda yell, or sometimes I kinda have like a whispering flow or something.

Like all the rappers i hear such as Lupe Fiasco and The Game and stuff, it seems like they just talk over the beat, and their accent or dialect is basically there flow, it doesnt seem like they try hard at all. And it still sounds good, Lupe especially.
But then you hear a rapper like Eminem, and that nigga just be shouting and sounding angry.


Bascially I just need tips on my Flow and Delivery, Ive heard that my flow is good and all but like damn, I feel like im trying to hard and shit. And when I try to just basically talk over a beat, I sound boring as fuck.






and also, that Nigga Blake Jay on this forum, his song called "History Books" it sounds like that nigga is just talking regularly but it still sound fucking dope, but when I rap, I have to like strain my voice or sum shit.

you have to push your voice, more like breath control and stuff, but you should be straining. you're right with the idea that your flow and all should be similar to you just talking. Not necessarily monotone, but one day pay attention to how you talk with your friends. that should be the equivalent of your flow on the mic. That's why people typically start off sounding very monotone when they start recording, they put too much emphasis on reading what they've written so they sound one in the same. If you took more time to read and recite and get comfortable with your lyrics, then when you spit em to the beat it wouldnt sound so monotone.

Although many people can just flow and not really try. I've realized lately that I've took a lot of cues from Drake and use a similar monotone style flow when I rap. I'm not a Drake stan by any means, just a coincidence I guess from me listening to Take Care tracks too much.

Smoke some chronic, and try to Have many flows ranging from stupid to beast. Cuz flow is the most important area at first, when u master your flows, then you can concentrate on some deeper lyrics.

Rap on any beat as well

Yeah I understand what you mean..for me it depends on the beat. Like that history books song you talked about, the beat was just chill and slow..it would have sounded dumb for me to be screaming on that beat..but other songs like my lord knows verse, you can tell I'm kinda raising my voice (or screaming lol) Nd spittin harder (no homo)..because it would have sounded dumb for me to come on the Lord Knows beat with a chill flow like history books..when It comes down to it most people don't like there own rapping voice (I don't like mine)..but vie heard your songs and your voice sounds fine to me

this is my exact problem. i always end up deleting my work because of it, i'm a bit of a perfectionist. however, i'm currently working on so stuff and i'll see how that goes.

Well first of all it depends on the beat. Every beat is different and therefore requires a different flow and delivery. You just have to listen to enough rap so that you can hear the beat and immediately start hearing in your head how you sound on a beat. That comes with practice and experience. Now secondly, if you're black you don't have to put as much effort into your rapping because your voice naturally sounds good rapping. If you're white you have to over exaggerate everything in order to sound good. Use math as a metaphor if you want to hit a 2 you have to rap like a 4 because on the mic everything will be cut in half. So you have to rap twice as angry a you want to sound in order to get that sound. Basically it all comes with practice, the more you rap the more control over your voice you'll get.

Well I'm black. But there have been people who said I sound white. And my dad is Jamaican and my mom is from the virgin islands so I think I have a bit of a accent.
