  • Sample + Flip : Kingdom Hearts Theme Sample [Chill & Smooth but still bangin]

Submitted this for TAGG's producer contest:

    MP3 Player SoundClick

It's real chopped up and manipulated but it's still fairly smooth -- has a ambient, chilled-out vibe but with energetic drums (It's on that Clams Casino vibe if you know who that dude is)

There's a nice fat bass in there but it's pretty low in the frequencies so if you gots a sub, turn that shit on and bang the **** out; otherwise, I layered the bass upon itself and raised it an octave so it's still there for the non-sub system users but it might not have as much presence as you'd like -- but jam this in your car or on a big system and this should bang real nice

    Here be the sample:

(sampled mostly from the first like 20 seconds then took bits and pieces from other spots all over)
I try to stay away from samples with a lot of views + anime soundtracks are getting real popular with producers lately and I just love diggin into obscurity and coming out with gems but I played around with this one and couldn't resists the chops I was coming up with -- hopefully you will agree that I made the right decision in banging with this one

Cool beat... but I have some overall feedback of your productions...

I've been starting to notice this. You don't really have your own sound or style yet. Which isn't a bad thing. But every time you do a certain type of beat style, it's like this...

Trap beat - *Lex Luger type* & then you sorta bite Lex Luger's style
Spacey beat - *Clams Casino type* & then you sorta bite Clams Casino's style
Dusty old school hip hop beat - *Dusty old school hip hop producer type* & then you sorta bite that certain producers style

You see what I'm getting at? You don't have your own style. And I see you're taking producing seriously. I browse Soundclick for beats probably once a beat and I always catch your beats on the charts on there. What if someone buys one of your beats where you bite these certain producers style and then it happens to get big? You're gunna be looked at as that "one producer who bit ______'s style".

I know you're probably still developing "your sound" so don't take this as a bad thing, I'm just pointing this out. I think you should start finding your own drum pattern, or your own signature snare, or your own synth, etc. That would bring you to the next level imo.

I definitely feel ya man; it's not an easy thing tho -- I mean, essentially what you have to do is find a sound you're exceedingly good at, that's [relatively] difficult for other's to mimic, and at the same time something that's not really being currently done. It helps you create a brand new audience and the fact that your fans could say something like "oh man, this dude on youtube makes dope ass shit -- he does like old school sample beats but throws in these dope 8Bit sounds and it's amazing"; people will be more willing to check you out, be interested to hear how you do that, want to hear that specific sound, etc and will want to spread the music; it's a necessary marketing tactic to really growing a fanbase and developing a sound -- and it even creates a fanbase for a type of music that hopefully you're the only person doing (other people will try to mimic you, but many will prefer the original sound/style from you)

so I'm definitely with you there, and it's not something that I actively am trying to create right now but it is something I need to find -- I guess that's more how I'm looking at it now, instead of trying to find it, I'm sorta waiting for it to hit -- which is probably more of a bad thing and just my laziness. I really just have to sit down more and try random shit like running my drums through a phaser that I create or something new like trying to autotune my drums or whatever the fuck it ends up being -- just something that's new and sounds dope but nobody has really thought to do it yet

the last thing I wanna just put out there though is I never go into a beat thinking "oh yeah, I'm gonna make this sound like Kanye" or whoever (whether or not it does in the end is relatively unintentional); the "branding" of the beat (such as putting "Clams Casino Type Beat) all comes after I've made the beat just before I'm going to upload it to YouTube or Soundclick -- I sit down and listen to it and then apply the name afterwards; this comes from that I sell my beats on soundclick -- so I just try to think of whatever big name my beat sounds most suited to (again though, after I've made the beat) and throw their name on it just to attract people to hit the play button in the soundclick charts; it's completely riding people's coat tails and using their name to get people to check out my shit but more-so, it just gives the people an idea of what to expect when they hit the play button; the other side is it will gain more views on YouTube when people search "Clams Casino Type Beat" which could lead to more people heading to my site and buying some beats -- now that I've typed that all out, it sounds like it kinda cheapens my creativity lol but it is what I'm doing

anyway, I could go on a little more but this is wayyy to long already so I gotta end this haha

        (btw gotta spread for props)
