                  Jordan is the better defender.

Jordan is the greater player, when listing all of his accomplishments.

Offensively, I take Kobe on a horrible team, or if I need bulk scoring from an individual.

If I have shooters stacked around that particular player, I take Jordan.

Defense is where the difference is, and it's not really about the ability, but the effort. I believe MJ could have dropped 70+ in his career, but he rarely took nights off on the defensive end, and that made him just a little bit more reliant on his shooters. Given that zones were illegal back then (you had to commit to a double, and leave someone wide open), Jordan had it easier than Bryant if we're discussing offense (hand-checking is better to play against than zone defense and forced doubles), but back on defense, Jordan really didn't have much help when you consider what teams weren't allowed to do. Yeah, Pippen was one of the greatest defensive players of all time, but he didn't always take the best offensive player, either. Jordan would be assigned a lot of two-guards, simply because many of the threes would try and post Pippen up, and because of Pip's post defense, he would also play a lot of minutes at the four.

Kobe had Shaq, but in two of those three championships, he was attempting the most shots AND running the offense. That is a role that Jordan really didn't carry on his shoulders during his championship seasons, as Pippen was able to facilitate, and Jordan would rack up his assists from it (teams had no idea how to stop the duo, so they committed, and forced both to pass out to open shooters, and holy hell, Chicago had shooters).

At any given time, Kobe's defense did match up to Jordan's, but over an entire season, he didn't prove this, all to conserve energy on the offensive end.

The greatest player of all time is Jordan. He has the combination of skills + accomplishments that nobody else does.

The most skilled player of all time could be Kobe, but there are a few forks in the road that held him back. Having Shaq in the middle both helped and hurt him...field goal percentage could have been much higher if there wasn't a 25-30 PPG big clogging the lane in the triangle. If Kobe played next to a legitimate point guard, or a point-forward, his efficiency may have been up due to that as well. Physical defense will never, EVER be more effective than a zone or a double team...don't care what you say, I can vouch for this being a scoring two-guard myself, and there's a reason why there are so many guards shooting 50% or better before the rule change.

Jordan is the GOAT. Kobe is the better scorer. MJ the better defender, as he put it on display every night. Kobe has a broader skillset. If they were both drafted in 1984 (or in 1996), this argument becomes far, far more interesting. Even with what we have to work with now...the gap is not as wide as many say, but Jordan still takes #1. Don't worry...you won't see any bias from me...Jordan and Kobe are my two favorite players, and I grew up watching MJ as the guy, long before Kobe was a high school phenom.

One of the best opinions I've ever read.. It explains everything in an easy and simple way..
