  • Serious Discussion: What do you define as "Lyrical" (No Trolling)

NOTE: Please give serious answers, and try not to overtly flame other users. Civil discussion.

The term "Lyrical" is thrown around A LOT in the Hip Hop community, so I wanted to ask everyone what they consider to be "Lyrical" as many people consider being lyrical to mean different things. Even Jay-Z has said in an interview that being lyrical is subjective.

Many of you I'm sure already know my thoughts lol. What I consider to be lyrical comes just from the basis of the word "Lyrics" implying a heavy focus on the actual words in the song, complex rhyme schemes, multiple syllable rhyming, ect. To me being lyrical isn't only about the actual flow as it is about word usage and how you put them together.

Examples: Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Nas, Rakim, Jay Z-(back in the day)

    I don't think there is a definition.

Just making sick rhymes with meaning behind them.

Having a tangible message/purpose while maintaining a reasonably dense/complex level.

Imo- Jay Z is not lyrical tbh.

        While Nas is.

Meanwhile I'm just chopping off doors
Put the front on the back, cause I'm back and forth
Put the front on the back of the 'Bach like a boss

So I'm fronting on niggas when I'm backing off

            Jay Z aint lyrical...

              Lol really. That's lyrical.

Let me rephrase, after RD Jay hasn't been consistently impressive. NCITW was great recently. But for the most part it's dumbed down with greater emphasis on his flow.

So we live a life like a video
When the sun is always out and you never get
              old
              And the champagne’s always cold
And the music is always good
And the pretty girls just happen to stop by in the
              hood
And they hop their pretty ass up on the hood of
              dat pretty ass car
              Without a wrinkle in today
              Cuz there is no tomorrow
              Just some picture perfect day
              To last a whole lifetime
              And it never ends
Cos all we have to do is hit rewind
So lets just stay in the moment, smoke some
              weed,
              Drink some wine,
Reminisce talk some shit forever young is in your
              mind
Leave a mark that can’t erase neither space nor
              time
So when the director yells cut,
              I’ll be fine,
              I’m forever young...

              ^^^^

I said he has to use complexity to obscure lack off apparent content. #Facts.

                  I also never said he wasn't good. I just don't think he's top 5.

I consider being lyrical as being great with words also why it's lyrical = lyrics, and also subject matter. A great example is Nas.
Someone who isn't "lyrical" imo is ppl like 2 Chainz and Kid Ink. They aren't really great with subjects and epic rhymes and words but they got swag and create great "atmosphere" and punchlines when they rap.
