Does Black Friday have something to do with thanksgiving? Excuse my australian ignorance

At some point years ago the retailers figured out that a lot of people do their Christmas shopping the day after thanksgiving. So they started offering sales that day. The sales started getting bigger and bigger every year til it turned into a frenzy.
