Eh. Nas was never mainstream like that. And don't really see anyone talking about his sales (didn't even know what the projection was). Wayne is in (or should be in) the same league as Kanye and Eminem. 140 is an OK first week for a regular rapper - not a mainstream heavyweight. And the overall sales are weak as you stated.

Yes, Lil Wayne has more followers than Nas, that's fact, but also Kanye and Em fuck with pop music more, their fanbase includes the same people who listen to Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran or Justin Bieber.

Kanye has all the media attention for his celebrity life with the Kardashians, his feud with Taylor Swift.

Em has songs on the radio with popstars like Ed Sheeran or Rihanna.


Lil Wayne is GOAT and doing rap music, but you don't hear his singles on the radio or pop playlists like that.

He infers that the situation is like that but I don't really think it is tbh. Like Young Money artists (Gudda Gudda) are dropping their singles independently and not under YM - yet YM promotes it on social media. Also Funeral had multiple push backs didn't it If Wayne truly owned YM I don't think they'd be doing that. I think Universal still has a claw in the business. We will know for sure I think when Collegrove 2 comes out. If it's a true collaborative album this time or a 2 Chainz solo album with multiple Wayne features.

And eh - tbh it's not far fetched. Things like that can happen. If the label put in an amount of money and did not see return - which is possible since the album didn't even go Gold, they may choose not to spend on the next release. Compared to other rap releases from dudes of Wayne's stature such as Eminem and Kanye, it didn't do well and those were probably the projections the label used.

Everything I've seen and heard makes me think that situation was just an impasse. Wayne could have been releasing music normally through CM, multiple people said he could have dropped C5 whenever he wanted, but they weren't paying him and owed him a lot etc. so he didn't want to drop anything until he was off the label. 2 Chainz spoke about the Collegrove thing, I can't remember if he gave the specific reason but I remember him saying he gave Wayne all the profits.


The YM artists thing is weird though.

I follow the charts closely as well. Eminem and Kanye both did 250+ with their last albums. Wayne is in-capable of that. Wayne is a "GOAT" right Then this is his competition - not Jeezy, TI, Ross and all the other "Legends" from that era. Additionally Wayne's week to week is much lower than his peers - new or old.

Eminem did 269 first week and is currently at 900+. Wayne fell out of the top 50 best selling rap albums of the year because his total sales was so bad. Last I saw he was around 360K and doing like 2-4K a week.


Based on his what his peers do, and what Wayne has done in the recent past, I expect much better sales from Wayne. 180K+ atleast first week and atleast Gold.

Artists who did much less first week this year (Moneybagg Yo - 66K, Megan Thee Stallion - 36K, Rod Wave - 72K) have caught up and since surpassed Wayne's album sales. 139 isn't even a top 10 hiphop first week this year. Even when the Deluxe dropped, it did like 12K. G-Herbo dropped his deluxe the same week and did 28K. G-Herbo. A "street rapper" with not much of a commercial presence. With less relevant features on his delxue compared to Wayne.

The first album he's dropped since Carter 2 that didn't have a top 30 single on hot 100.
His worst first week since IANAHB1 (which did not have a typical release).
His first album to not produce a single that went Platinum since Tha Carter.
His first album ever to not go atleast Gold.
*FWA is not counted for obvious reasons

I see this argument alot. Myself and @when_it_snow_im_on_top compiled their unit sales for 2010's. I'm aware Em ate the 2000's but they been pretty close in 2010's. These numbers are their estimated total sales as of right now:

Wayne vs Em (2010s) in album units USA

Features have been translated to album units (10 single sales = 1 album sale)

Wayne feats - (6.5 million)
Rebirth - (1.5 mill)
IANAHB - (1.5 mill)
Tha Carter IV - (5.5 mill)
IANAHB2 - (1.5 mill)
C5 - (1.7 mill)
Wayne total = (18.2 million)


Eminem feats & soundtrack singles - (1 million)
Recovery - (8.5 million)
MMLP2 - (4.5 million)
Revival - (1.2 million)

Hell: The Sequel - (1.1 million)
Eminem total = (18 million)

Wayne has a slight edge (more of a tie because these numbers so close) because of features, but overall the numbers are very close. Just Recovery was a monster. 2011+ in the US is very comparable.

We only look at US numbers, and to say Wayne wasn't in same league as Eminem - at least in 2010's - is false.

Nas does 40 or 50k with King's Disease and gets respect and praise for his commendable numbers. It's a different Era 140k is okay. Not great but okay. Granted the following weeks after release were weak for Funeral which only demonstrates that interest and need for wayne is still there but people weren't digging the album.
