first off, his job as a musician is to make music, not to entertain the masses.
I'd argue that him pandering down to the masses is what is interfering with the quality of his music.
before, on top of all the raw emotion and the flows and all that.
waynes music was very much for himself. it was an insulated work.
he did what he wanted to do, how he wanted to do it.
and he had excellent taste so it came out ill.
somewhere down the line tho.
two things happened. he got huge.
we know wayne to be a private person.
and his earlier music was detailed with his history.
thats what makes us care about wayne. cos we do get to know wayne.
through his music. the events of his life and how he thinks.
wayne has been a solo rapper for 16 years and has probably delivered.
more bars about himself than any rapper ever. his entire career is identity laden.
so its not a far out thing to say that you feel like you know wayne.
but now with his intense celebrity.
its like he cant be as personal. the fishbowl has grown too large.
its a different audience that might not understand him the way his original audience would.
so we end up with veneer raps. he's taken himself out of the music. and only raps for the show now.
he isn't expressing himself anymore. and that would almost be passable, except that hes also watered down.
his style to make his music more accessible. hes a growing pop star that wants to grow more.
you cant spread yourself thin like that and expect a good product.
its too diluted to be of any worth. so theres that.
the other, is this delusion, that in order to be a great artist.
he has to do more than just rap. he feels like he has to be able to sing.
to make songs of various genres just to be considered this great artist.
this is 100 percent misguided.
he was already a great artist just being a rapper.
and there was nothing wrong with that. but its almost upsetting.
its cos hes allowing himself to be pushed by the idea that rap isnt great art.
further diluting his work while adding on mediocre projects to his catalog.
so on both counts, i think it comes down to wayne being misguided.
by his path and his own delusion. he needs to find himself in his music again.
more importantly put himself in his music and realize thats enough to be an artist.
i know he has it in him.
thats what i heard on the smoke sumn remix.
it was like hearing the real wayne stretch out his legs.
and walk around being himself again. thats why he sounded like he was.
smiling all the way through the verse. he was able to have fun and enjoy what he was doing.
like he hasnt in the past year(excluding whatever good features theres been) if he could get back to that.
he'd be straight but he might be too lost to find his way back. idk.
Too long, didn't read
Oh and welcome back mode. Haven't seen you around here in a while.
You should take the time to read it. It is the epitome of posts I am looking for in this thread.
The part where it says Wayne is delusional about being a great artist got me interested though. It's not that Wayne is doing rock or singing just for the sake of being a great artist; he did it because he loved it. It's not that rap music isn't great; it's just damn underrated. Which is why to be considered a great artist, you need to be more than a great rapper.

You are missing the point though. Wayne was a great artist before he started experimenting. He was a great artist before Lollipop, Rebirth, and How to Love. Now many people do not consider him to be.
The fact that he has to branch out to other genres of music to become a great artist defiles rap. He is implying that rap cannot make someone a great artist, but he is wrong. Jay-Z and Eminem are great artists, and they have never (or seldom) erred from their craft.

chill out. he can do what ever he wants. why do you care if others like lil wayne or consider him to be a great artist? some ppl on here seem to have no life outside wayne.

I'm not concerned with what others think. If Wayne keeps his current attitude up, I am not sure that I'll be able to keep listening to him.
