No one knows....my guess a little more grounded and less gimmicky......

Lil Wayne has become the biggest gimmick in rap next to Nicki Minaj...he would've probably been less of a gimmick.....as far as rapping skill.....who knows...

Way doper than he already was during the Hustler Musik days. Maybe it would've been much easier to defend him than it it nowadays as a legitimate rapper.

C1 and C2 are mainstream as well

your perception of what is mainstream and what is not isn't right.

Even dudes like Kendrick Lamar and Big K.R.I.T. are constantly releasing mainstream rap music.

Sean Price, MF DOOM, Pharoahe Monch, Aesop Rock, that's underground hiphop.

What does being underground have to do with how one makes music or not? Just because an artist is underground, does not neccessarily mean that he/she’s good.

                  You?

He was making mainstream music way before Tha Carter III. All his albums besides True Story & Get It How U Live!! are mainstream

Wayne start getting "mainstream" in the CIII era. Don't you wonder why he only has 4 Grammies? Or when you say "lil Wayne" to a non-hip hop fan he start to think of lollipop or a milli? Yeah...

I think there's a misunderstanding of "mainstream" among us here. Wayne's music is no different from the usual mainstream rap since day 1, and tbh he has been popular in the hip-hop community ever since Bling Bling. All his solo albums made into the Top 20. It's only since Lollipop that he was recognized in the pop mainstream world.

What does mainstream mean to y'all tho....?

Wayne didn't go mainstream in the hot boys days or C1 or C2. You guys think hustle musik or go DJ is mainstream?
