Yeah, Wayne was much more respected than Kendrick. He was a hell of a lot more versatile and witty. This nigga practically breathed new life into the game. He had swagger rap and meaningful rap all in one package.

The ONLY reason he has haters is because he completely took over as the face of hip hop and even managed to transcend it in a way only Eminem had done previously. When anything gets too popular the haters become VERY vocal and even powerful enough to sway more casual opinions. It's sad.

Yeah, Wayne isn't what he once was, but in all honesty it's due to his subject matter. He doesn't really talk about anything anymore. It isn't his mic presence or skill that's weaker than other artists today. It's just what he chooses to talk about. Because when I think about it, nothing Kendrick says makes me say, "Wow, how to did he think of that?" Nothing Kendrick says has me stumped as to wtf he's trying to say. I get everything he spits and I don't have to dissect his bars. It's just his subject matter is a lot deeper than Wayne's these days.

I don't think Wayne would be as huge as he was if the internet was what it is today. These days we know about every song that is getting released, and we are able to comment on all of it. A few years back most people heard the hits and the best of the artists because the wack shit didn't go viral, at least that's how I felt it. I heard the hits here and there, bought some CD's.
What I'm trying to say is people are way more influenced by others opinions these days, and still, with not even half of the catalog Wayne had before he blew up, Kendrick's hype is huge. Kendrick didn't do shit for his hype compared to Wayne.

Honestly, though, I think even that doesn't play a factor in this. Sure, Kendrick's hype is huge, but is it Wayne huge? Wayne's hype from C2 - C3 era is only matched with Eminem's and even topped 50's as far as I see it. Eminem was literally the only artist that Wayne didn't touch with his hype.

With all the hype surrounding Kendrick, I still fail to see him pushing anymore than 600k first week for any of his albums in his career, even with huge successful singles and going the Eminem route and using a big singer for the hook (i.e. Rihanna, Adele, Beyonce, etc.). Wayne not only had hype, but he had the streets and everything behind him, AND he had that voice that was either loved or hated. But know what he did? He worked around his voice that some people said sounded like a frog or w/e and made a huge single all by himself (of course Static on it as well, but then he did it for the second time by himself on How To Love). That's something Kendrick could never do, because even if he tried going that autotune route for something of that caliber, he would sound very awkward. Wayne's versatility, mic presence, demeanor, attitude, sound, hype, popularity, etc. was just too much.

And another thing is exactly what YOU mentioned - Kendrick's hype is huge even with not even half of Wayne's catalog. Wayne had a very odd way of tackling the game, and that was forcing you to believe he was the best rapper alive - which was believed and he claimed the title with no opposition. He literally was EVERYWHERE, as you could tell by articles from around 07 (like when 50 called him a 'feature whore'). Wayne's work ethic was unmatched and still, to this day, nobody has ever had something as serious of a work ethic as Wayne did in his prime while having such hype behind him.

Long story short though, Wayne was respected like Kendrick is now (respected more actually), but Kendrick will never reach said height/hype Wayne has/had.

TBVH I DONT like K.Dot and I dont think I will ever like him (I aint a hater to make it clear) around Weezy Prime I was a kid and I only cared about Wayne music which my brother would give it to me and I was only 9 but to listen to Weezy according the way I remember I was five because thats when I liked to pump "Way Of Life" 2002. But to face the fact, I dont know why people are on K.Dot's back because his bars are simple, no need to crack your mind or to google that shit like Weezy lines, and he aint that famouse at my province like Weezy, there are few people who hate Weezy at South Africa TBVH.

Lol I honestly think it would've been too hard for these Hip Hop sites to even keep track of all his songs, features, leaked tracks, etc. during that time frame tbh.

i wanna say mostly no, because wayne had the stigma of the bling era on his back,

which is mostly frowned upon by hiphop, so there wasnt much he could do as a lyricist to prove he was more than that,

to a certain group of people( purist, elitist, morons, the such) so i think, from a hiphop critical acceptance stance, no, almost definitely not.


if you ask a bunch of hip hop fans, they might say 'good kid maad city' is better than any project wayne has put out.

so i think critically, as far as textbook hiphop goes,

kendrick is far more respected. hes easier to read.

word to what @tyquan was saying, for a long time, waynes approach to lyricism wasnt really respected at all.

he sorta just put himself on through sheer force, and really, being undeniable by anybody paying attention.




i've always felt like if wayne hadnt come out of the cash money era.

and was a new underground rapper that surfaced in 2004, lyrically, hiphop wise, he wouldve been paired more often w lupe, as the new age standard for lyricism(2006-2007, when lupe was dropping f&l and the cool)

First of all "lyricism" is subjective. And im still sticking by that he's the est wordplay wise. He changed the game and if you actually listen you can pick up on entendres no one else can do without it sounding forced and obvious/corny. Nobody comes close to that natural wordplay methods not since Big.

Kendrick is getting alot of praise because his rap style is a breath of fresh air to the trap/beat over lyricism/clubbanger era thats been goin on for a while.

I think I missed Waynes Prime as well I didnt actually become a fan until after C3 dropped. I used to hate on Wayne before I actually listened to him. I always thought his voice was annoying so I never gave it attention. But then one of my friends in middleschool told me to listen to "I feel like dying", "A Millie", and "lollipop". It was a rap after that. Wayne fan ever since.

KDot is good and could become a Drake or maybe even a Wayne in the future. BUT i personally think he is being set up for failure because after his "control" verse everyone lookin at his verses and expecting the same if not better. Soon as people get bored it could be wrap for him.
