i thnk youre right, think he feels very obligated to styles. it feels like hes trying to press every button to see what works, thats been an aimless approach on this tape..

one of the major reasons i liked d5 was bcos, i thought he presented all his different styles more tastefully.. i think the sound at the time was more varied.. drake was popular, kendrick, kanye, chance.. future and thug werent prominent yet..

but now it feels like hes competing w them for relevance on their native sounds. not because he didnt have a hand in influencing them.. but because those cuts are just more modern, theyve been bred for future and thug..

and thats where i get ehhh about wayne evolving their sound.. i just dont think so. probably closest is hollyweezy. hollyweezy, pour up are some of the more fully fledged 2015 wayne songs..

the problem for me, is that there isnt enough of those, instead we get songs that sound like 2008, or 2010.. mixtapes that sound like 2004, because everything is so scattered.. and hes always been like this. its probably impossible to get him to change.

but everyone rn has an incredibly reliable team trying to make the best music possible for their star. i dont get that impression from waynes camp. the same sloppy approach that handles his marketing.. his internet presence.. is trickling down to the music. its like those dudes havent adjusted to the times.

thats a different problem tho, musically tho, youre right. i think wayne is owning a lot of his music, especially those crooner songs. those for sure, feel the most honest to me. hes not posturing as much on those, kinda just letting it loose. id love to wayne keep moving in that direction..


as far as bars go, man im not surprised, hes been retarded nice since 2013. i do think this a down release compared to sftw2 but he has some ridiculous sections on here. ive never really judged him line for line tho, especially on a line like "my bitch got cat eyes" cos the context matters so much. how he goes from flashlight landmine cat eyes or whatever.. is all just as enjoyable, and it is really the whole thing, that makes whole thing work. i always thought line for line criticism of wayne, doesnt do you any good.

wayne uses all of his brain in his raps.. cant pick that up a bar at a time.

totally true tho, discipline is a good word for it. hes definitely back in shape, and killing shit like he used to.. i think for wayne to be important going forward, hes going to have to reel that discipline for an entirely original project.


think for wayne.. to become a big deal again.. he needs an album with 12 perfect records. itd pretty much have to be flawless. doesnt have to be to pimp a butterfly.. but has to a least be yeezus.

Wayne music does work better lyrically as a whole, as opposed to a line by line analyzation – which is also why reading his lyrics without hearing them is never good either!He is definitely a quotable lyricist though, and one of my biggest gripes during his “falling off” period around IANAHB2 was that his lyrics were just lists of unrelated things, often delivered with a naughty child’s mentality.When he’s on point, he tends to not only be very clever, but also he sticks to an idea for a bit longer… even if it’s just two lines as opposed to one, and it makes all the difference.That’s why the cat eye line annoys me.I double checked the lyrics to My Name Is and there is a line a few bars earlier about cats (pussy reference) and the flashlight, but the “my broad’s got cat eyes” line stands alone:

Now, I know the lyrics of Lil Wayne are not meant to be studied like Proust – or even Kendrick Lamar, lol – but if we’re digging deep here, I might as well point out my issue with low grade Wayne.He’s talking about his violent nature and his crew, and then he randomly tells us his broad’s got cat eyes, then goes back to talking about his trap house and dealing etc.That sort of amateurish lazy writing was all over the 2013 stuff (including most of D5, which we’ve disagreed on in the past).He keeps it more in check here, but occasionally one slips by the goalie!!





Anyway, it’s just a bit of fun and shouldn’t be analyzed like that, but being a Wayne fanatic I notice patterns, trends and whatnot.I’m sure most of Wayne’s “thinking fans” like us do.Wayne is kind of like that genius kid who is forced to go to public school.. he gets bored, he acts out, he even gives up completely at times – perhaps just to see what happens, or to piss someone off, or whatever the case may be (see IANAHB2 and even C4, which was just about the most boring and non-creative rap album from a big name ever).All of these things are reasons why I’m fucking thrilled to be getting so much quality music from wayne this year.His mind is fertile ground again for great ideas, but his style has changed a lot.Quality control is mostly on point right now though, whether you like autotune, Thug/Future flows or not.





I have a theory that this barrage of material in 2015 is the result of Wayne’s camp realizing awhile back that C5 might’ve flopped had they put it out 12-18 months ago or whenever it was supposed to originally be. Despite what anyone in Wayne’s camp states, I bet S4TW2, FWA and NC2 are basically just research for C5.I think the Birdman beef was set up for hype and to give Wayne purpose again – and it kind of worked.I also think that they are all looking at every review, every comment, everything uttered about these records in 2015 so they can figure out what will make C5 a true classic that delivers on every level.At least that’s what they would do if they were smart.





The funniest part of all though, is that it hardly should take a committee – I think almost any hardcore Wayne fan on this board would be able to sit down with a few hundred tracks and cherry pick the most fire ones… creating a well rounded picture of Wayne…this idealized perfect Wayne album you mentioned.Wayne’s problem is he has too many cooks in the kitchen, and not enough control over his creative vision personally – or maybe he just doesn’t even care.He’s admitted to simply rapping and rapping, then letting the others figure the rest out.





Let’s hope they don’t fuck it up.

see, i dont mind some of those lines because hes rhymes so immediately, that it makes sense. i feel like that adds to his efficiency with packing ideas into lines. i think spontaneity is one waynes biggest strengths, thats gonna be present at the macro and micro levels of his music..

2010-2012 tho.. when he was super uninspired and there was no quality control.. was when it was really getting corny. lol i legit barely listened to wayne for those years, dedication 5 brought me all the way back from a long, long ways away.

i do think waynes work should be analysed tho, for me hes one of the greatest writers in the most dynamic form of literature. hes worth picking apart, and i dont necessarily think being critcal of a project is being critical of him, per se.

music at this level takes a pretty strong team, and his camp is just super weak. i dont think theyre nearly smart enough to pull off what youre talking about, i think the process is as usual. feed wayne beats, wayne raps, and see what happens.

i doubt theyre collecting and mining data on what works and what doesnt..

but yup, youre right, either too many cooks, not enough control.. the complete lack of a creative vision. i think all these things are likely, and in 2015 and going forward.. the artists are too focused to be dropping tapes with mixing and mastering mishaps, with no cohesion.. w no unified sound..

what wayne needs more than anything right now, is an executive producer.

2015 has been the best year for Wayne music since 2008 probably. If he surprise drops C5 for Christmas (which will prob never happen) the year will be legendary... but it's already a classic year. First of all, Wayne started rapping like he means it again pretty much full time! Not only that, but we got S4TW2, FWA and NC2. That's a classic year for a Wayne fan by any yardstick. I know we are gonna look back on 2015 someday and say these were all classics - especially if Wayne falls off again like he did 2011-2013, which I hope he never does.
