Re: Official Album Review Thread
THANK ME LATER
The much hyped debut by up and coming rapper Drake. Does it live up to the hype?
1.Fireworks - Drake lets his heart out with this track over a great beat the goes great with his introspection. Drake's singing was good on the hook as well, but i though Alicia would be given a bigger part. Either way, a great, even epic way to open up the album and for Drake to portray where he's at right now. (8.5/10)
2.Karaoke - A chilled out tune about sacrificing love in his pursuit to just make it. The production from Francis and the Lights is phenomenal, and Drake sings and raps with passion. A moving song, and most definitely one of the highlights of the album. (9.5/10)
3.The Resistance - Another reflective introspective song continuing the vibe of the previous songs and shows Drake's vulnerability. The song is about people Drake used to be close with moving away from him as he becomes more famous and spends less time at home. It also shows him off as an excellent lyricist. (9/10)
4.Over - If the first three songs were the calm before the storm, Over is the storm. It shows a movement between introspect and vulnerability to aggressiveness and egoism, and instead of expressing melancholy over his situation, he rebels with energy. The beat is one of the best I've heard in a long time, and his delivery in the verses is equally as epic. The hook had to grow on me, but is addicting after a few listens. The lyrics could be a bit stronger, but they show his energy at the moment, so it works. (9.5/10)
5.Show Me A Good Time - An uptempo song with some great Kanye West production. Drake is at his best on the verses, with many quotables. A solid hip-hop song. (8.5/10)
6.Up All Night - Drake and Micki over a dark Boi-1da beat. The beat is one of the best on the album, the hook is super catchy. Drake's verse is consistently respectable, while Nicki's has its highs and lows. I really think there should have been another verse here - the are three repetitions of the hook at one point without any new verses. The hook is good, but i think another verse would have helped develop the song more. (7.5/10)
7.Fancy - Featuring Swizz Beatz and T.I., over a hot beat produced by the former. Drake and T.I lay it down hard, but when the beat breaks down, the song seems to drag on. However, this broken-down section matches the vibe of the rest of the album more. the Swizz Beatz hook may have to grow on you, if it does at all. personally, i feel it, but it isn't for everyone. (7.5/10)
8.Shut It Down - I'm not sure how effective it was to put two songs with pretty much the same subject matter next to each other. However, this one is more of and R&B collaboration with The-Dream. The hook is great, Drake drops a decent verse, and the r&B verses serve mainly to buildup to the hook, which can be quite powerful. Like Fancy, the song has a breakdown, and in Shut It Down the beat flat out stops and a different one comes back, with a few more verses by Drake and the hook being changed to "Lay you down, down, down". Personally, i liked the song before this section, but I suppose it serves its purpose. (8.5/10)
9.Unforgettable - The Jeezy collabo. The concept is great, and the hook finds Jeezy and Drake trading lines over a beat with an R&B vibe. Both drop impressive verses, and surprisingly, Jeezy reveals a tender side. Solid song. (8/10)
10.Light Up - One of my favorites on the CD. The vibe created by the beat and the introspection from both Jay-Z and Drake returns the vibe to what it was in the beginning of Thank me Later. Drake drops one of his best verses on the album, the hook is powerful, and Jay-Z drops one of his best since his comeback. The coherence of the song is phenomenal, and the vibe created is on another level. (10/10)
11.Miss Me - Drake and the now incarcerated Weezy drop long verses over a triumphant Boi-1da beat. Drake lyrically kills it, and Weezy does Weezy, which works to a certain extent. The hook is fairly good as well. Drake clearly kills Wayne on this though, whose verse slightly devalues the song. (6.5/10)
12.Cece's Interlude - Drizzy getting his R&B on and venting his problems with his fame. You can tell he cares about what he's singing about. And the guitar solo at the end is good. as an interlude, it works. (8/10)
13.Find Your Love - An uptempo R&B song. Very catchy, and features impressive production from the always stellar Kanye West. The lyrics are decent, and the singing is quite good. Already a Billboard Top 10 hit, this will definitely be a huge hit over the summer. (9/10)
14.Thank Me Now - First of all, the Timbaland production is some of Timba's best. The verses are the highlights, which he kills. the hook is alright too. It is a fitting way to close the experience that is Thank Me Later. (8/10)
I find the Thank Me Later works more as a whole than as individual songs. The first four songs are without a doubt the highlight of the album, creating coherence that partly follows throughout the rest of the CD. This is one of the best rap debuts I've heard, and so far, the best album of the year for me.
