Abel (pronounced Able)Tesfaye (born February 16th 1990) is a 21 year old Canadian recording artist, rapper, writer, musician and producer who goes by the stage name The Weeknd (pronounced The Weekend not The Weakened) from Scarborough ,Toronto, Ontario. He’s Of Ethiopian descent, from Addis Ababa. Abel went to school at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute (BPCI).
Growing up in his teenage years, Abel had expansive taste in music, film & entertainment for somebody his age, his music influences are obviously The King Of Pop , Michael Jackson also iconic music greats as The Beatles , Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan , Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Jim Morrison, Sean Lennon, Syd Barrett, T-Bone Walker, Janis Joplin, George Harrison, James Brown, Stevie Wonder & legendary performers like Charlie Chaplin & Fred Astaire. His favorite band of the 80’s are Tears For Fears & is a fan of classic rock songs as Eric Clapton’s Layla, King Crimson’s Epitaph, Cream’s White Room, Scarborough Fair, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, The Canadian band The Mama’s & The Papa’s & legendary groups like The Rolling Stones, The Delfonics, Jefferson Airplane, the English group The Animals & the 1960’s girl group The Ronettes. He also listens to modern indie/rock like RadioHead, Daft Punk, The Cribs, My Morning Jacket, The Flaming Lips, Dengue Fever, Hiphop (Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Wu Tang, Kanye West, Consquence ), late 90’s music, (the likes of Ginuwine and Lauryn Hill) and todays artists like Lykke Li & Bon Iver. His love for French female singers like Sylvie Vartan, Francoise Hardy (Soleil) & also french music is evident with songs like April March’s Attention Cherie, Brigitte Bardot’s “ne me laisse pas l’aimer”, and of course France Gall’s ”Laisse Tomber Les Filles” which he would 2 years later sample on his 3rd mixtape Echoes Of Silence on the track Montreal.
Abel is a huge fan of the golden/classic era of movies, his favorite actors are Dustin Hoffman & Marlon Brando, others include Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Bruce Lee, Sean Connery, Christopher Walken and James Dean. Actresses as Mia Farrow, Audrey Hepburn and Gina Lollobrigida. His favorite filmmakers/directors are Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Woody Allen, Larry Clark, Spike Lee, Tim Burton, Alfred Hitchcock. and Spike Jonze (big fan). He’s also a fan of modern day actors like Robert Downey JR, Leonardo Di Caprio, Ryan Gosling, Brad Renfro, James Franco, Adam Sandler and actresses like Zooey Deschanel, Natalie Portman, Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Connelly and Sharon Stone.
His favorite movies are Sorsese’s The Last Temptation Of Christ & Casino, Sean Penn’s Dead Man, & Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Tom Cruise’s Color Of Money, Francis Ford Coppola’s Outsiders & Dracula, Michael Cimnino’s The Deer Hunter, David Lynch’s 1978 Blue Velvet, Star Wars, Christopher Walken’s The Dead Zone, western movies like A Man With No Name and The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, horror movies like Suspiria, John Carpenters The Thing , An American Werewolf In London & Rosemary’s Baby and Others as Good Will Hunting, Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation, Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs & Inglorious Bastards, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, The silent film The Man Who Laughs, Steven Spielberg’s Empire Of The Sun, 2000’s Almost Famous, Jack Nicholson’s Chinatown, Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Basketball Diaries, Thirteen, Alpha Dog, Dumb & Dumber and the 1993 comedy Dazed & Confused (which has a familiar tag with it).
