Kin Kane x Bulleez N Nerdz

In 2008 Abel Tesfaye and fellow Scarborough upcoming rapper Jesse Ray (whom had met a year before) formed the Rap/RNB duo Bulleez n Nerdz, Abel went under the stage name Kin Kane, (The name of Abel’s brother (Kin - connected, related by blood) in the bible, the two sons of Adam & Eve). The two had great chemistry performing together at parties & decided to make songs together with producer & friend Majes-D. They met up (via Facebook) with Tyse saffuri , the music executive & founder of Entyse Entertainment and his partner Nikki Clarke, whom they performed their first song for, “Godzilla”, the first track they had ever done together, After loving their personality & music he introduced them to his upcoming Toronto producer Kashif Majeed better known as Kid Klassic who was working at the time with a female R&B/POP group called Mynt . At that time Abel was writing RNB songs for other artists trying to make a library of material and the duo were working on some (mixtape) tracks, a first single was slated for release early 2009. Their first performance was at UFT (University Of Toronto) with fellow producer Majes-D in front of a 1000 people.

In June 2011, A song entitled Krispy by fellow Toronto rapper Mental McFly aka Rex B Mental (who Abel had been working with at the time) leaked. A few months later on December 7th, a member on Youtube leaked another track called When The Grip Hits, the original version for Krispy and In The Mood.

On December 4th 2011 a Radio Interview with Blu Orchid Media/Entertainment hit youtube, with the duo talking about their influences, upcoming projects and freestyling.

    Abel Tesfaye x The Noise...

The Noise production/writing team circa 2009

In July 2008 & after working with Entyse Entertainment’s producer Kashif Majeed aka Kid Klassic during his time as part of the duo Bulleez n Nerdz, Abel, Majeed & two other upcoming vocalists Tyler Done & Natalie Di Luccio formed a production/writing team called The Noise. They were signed by Lavish Life Management , a management company run by Brendan Malette, for producers and songwriters which shops their material to major label artists in order to get their beats, or songs, out onto airwaves and albums. Abel & the team had recorded & written several songs all produced by Kid Klassic intended for artists like Justin Timberlake & Robin Thicke like the track “Do It”, Abel had also written & was featured on Ray-J’s hook for Rebstar’s I Like It, a song which the she’s so lovely crew posted on their Tumblr. All the songs recorded were not intended for the artist (Abel) singing them but more as vocals for a demo to see how they would sound. (So believe when he says “he was forced to make records”). Also signed to lavish life at that time was producer T-Minus whom Abel had worked with, video footage of their studio session was leaked in 2011.

On May 23rd 2011, Complex released the track Birthday Suit, a demo for Drake which Abel had also recorded with The Noise. The track got members on Kanyetothe interested in what other early Abel Tesfaye material may be floating around on the internet so they started searching. A member by the name of Djamiel did some Google’n & found The Noise & Abel’s Myspace, Which lead another member ( Ghost ) to find a snippet of “Release Me” from The Noise Myspace, Djamiel later then posted 4 snippets for Do It, Rescue You, Appointment & X-Ray which also included download links. Later @Adam_Corwin found the full version of “Do It” A member named Street then found Abel’s bandcamp which included full versions of “Rescue You,” “Love Through Her,” and “Material Girl.” & Nigerian Royalty then posted everything together on his Soundcloud under the title “Unreleased The Weeknd.” At some point (after the actual post was deleted), Djamiel updated a zip file with the full tracks, Complex then made a Blog Post about what they had found and it started hitting other blogs like crazy. The full version of “Appointment” was leaked shortly after by a guy on Twitter named @JamieHoward91. At some point, Ear Milk then put them all together and named it The Noise EP.
On December 8th two more tracks Cure & Superhero (an alternate version of Rescue you) leaked and a day later a song called Party. Then finally on the 23rd of December 2011, the full version of X-Ray was released by YouTube member braedrums

She's So Lovely x Jeremy Rose x The Weekend

In October 2009, Abel Tesfaye along with friends La Mar Taylor & Hyghly Alleyne teamed up to form ” She’s So Lovely ” (SSL), a crew creating and redefining the relationship between video, photography and music. While setting up an online magazine their work was found on their Tumblr & Website. & on the sites Swagg ink and Swagg T.V where they interviewed & photoshot the likes of Big Sean, Freddie Gibbs & Amber Rose. Abel Himself even wrote article on Belstaff at Swagg News.
In 2010, Abel met an upcoming producer from Toronto, by the name of Jeremy Rose aka Zodiac at a party, the two got along & Jeremy asked Abel if he wanted to work on some rnb songs. Jeremy had already done the instrumentals & production for the songs years before and all that was missing was the vocals, for example, the instrumental for What You Need was one of the first songs Rose had produced back in 2007 & the first song Abel had put vocals on. He starting promoting the song performing it at The black student’s association at the university of Toronto and at clubs.

The duo recorded 4 songs together, What You Need which sampled Aaliyah’s Rock The Boat , Loft Music which sampled Beach House’s Gila, The Party which also sampled Beach House’s Master of None and a screwed version of The Morning. All of which were demos and early versions.

On October 12th 2010 the duo released their first single What You Need as The WeekEnd , with Abel Tesfaye on the vocals and Jeremy Rose handling the production. Two months later on December 13/14th and after Drake had introduced them on his Blog a day prior, they released their second single, The Morning and a day after, on the 15th , Loft Music. The duo (and She’s so lovely crew) starting gaining recognition online & were featured that same month in The Fader, mixpakrecords, Robin-waters & The NYTimes, being described as a breath of fresh air, going on to craft some of their own beautifully dressed R&B hits, capturing smooth vocal riffs alongside glitched and dragged beats. A Mixtape was supposed to be released during Christmas but was never finished due to a falling out between the two which led to their split but with Jeremy Rose agreeing that Abel can keep the songs they had already recorded.

It’s not clear why the two parted ways but it’s rumored at the time when Abel & Jeremy were working on the mixtape Abel was introduced to another upcoming producer from Toronto by the name of Carlo “Illangelo” Montagnese leading to a clash between the pair since they were supposed to be working as a “duo” with Jeremy Rose solely handling the production.

On December 18th , Abel decided the keep the name but dropped the E, operating under the stage name The Weeknd.

The Weeknd, The Build Up, House Of Balloons...

In January 2011 and after officially operating under the stage name The Weeknd, Abel started working with producer Ill Angelo, a video for the pair in the Studio had been released by the SSL crew but was then removed. One of the first songs they worked on was High for This, a song Abel had already written & premeditated, an acapella of him singing the intro in Toronto’s Yonge and Dundas Square on November 24, 2010 after rapper Joey Stylez’s concert at the Hard Rock Cafe leaked back in August 2011.

While working with Angelo, Abel was introduced to veteran producer, musician & guitarist Martin Doc Mckinney who had previously worked with the likes of Esthero & Res, Angelo was Mckinney’s protege & right hand. The three got in the studio together & starting working on the ‘masterpiece’ through the first 3 months of 2011. At that time, the 3 songs which were previously released at the end of 2010 started resurfacing under ” The Weeknd ”, after crew members and Mckinney started re-tweeting & posting them, building a hype for what this mysterious Toronto rnb ‘act’ had to offer.
On Feb 21st The Weeknd opened a twitter account, tweeting the line “i’m on that shit that you can’t smell baby.. so put down your perfume”, a week later on march 6th , the first song under his new alias, ” Wicked Games ” was released, produced by Doc Mckinney, the next day Drake tweeted another line from the same song, posting it on his OVO blog with the tag “OVOXO Gang, Faded Too Long” leading to more hype & anticipation knowing that this “act/group” was somehow affiliated with October’s very own. The Weeknd took to twitter thanking everyone for the response to the song and that this was only the beginning & also shutting down rumors that he was a group or a Duo Act.
On March 12th, 2011,The Weeknd & his crew started a Tumblr blog, headlining it “XO Til We Overdose”, a line which in someway he explained, also redefining and re-introducing his crew (which were previously known as She’s So Lovely).

On March 20th and after promising more songs & tweeting it’s lyrics The Weeknd released another song titled Coming Down also produced by Doc Mckinney, he later took to twitter asking his fans to be online at 8 PM then shortly after posting a picture/sign that a mixtape of all the songs released & more would be up on the website the-weeknd.com in 2hrs causing the site to crash
In almost 3 weeks the mixtape entitled House Of Balloons was downloaded 200,000 times from The Weeknd’s official website alone causing a frenzy on the internet and music blogs. The Mixtape contained 9 tracks, 4 of which had been released in 2010 all produced by Jeremy Rose, What You Need, Loft Music, The Morning & The party. Doc Mckinney & Ill Angelo re-produced What you need, and The Morning (which was previously screwed) with Abel’s vocals re-recorded & Doc playing the guitar on it. They extended Loft Music’s outro into some ambient trippy experience then “stretched out” The Party with Doc’s guitar flicks and Ill Angelo’s heavy drums making it a 2 part banger, entitled The party/The After Party. The Other 5 included were the 2 previously released slowjam anthems Wicked Games & Coming Down and 3 new tracks, the opener High For This, The title track which sampled the English punk/rock band Siouxsie And The Banshees Happy House and the closer The Knowing which sampled Cocteau Twin’s Cherry Coloured Funk.

The Mixtape was a breakthrough success, A debut impeccably produced with jams that successfully showcased Tesfaye’s slick vocals and his twisted tell-all lyrics of a decadent and hard partying lifestyle receiving great reviews from Rolling Stone, PitchFork, Complex & French Vogue. Songs like High For This were featured as promo for the final season of the hit HBO show Entourage, The Morning at Coachella 2011 and a string of Unofficial Fan made videos which The Weeknd responded to .
The iconic Photography for the mixtape was done by crew member Lamar & designed by Ben Swantek @ publicbathing

OVOXO, The Mod Club, & Thursday....

                      OVOXO

On March 30th & after he had tweeted his song Wicked Games, posting it on his OVO blog and asking his fans to follow him on twitter, Drake officialy introduced The Weeknd at the 2011 JUNO Awards After Party, telling the crowd that if they ain’t “too fucked up” when they go home to download his mixtape House Of Balloons. Drake described him as someone special to his heart & that it’s been a long time coming. After hype & speculation surrounding his affiliation to Drake, Abel tweeted OVOXO gang shit & later posted a designed logo on his tumblr confirming the Toronto movement.
Drake was introduced to Abel a couple of months prior by Oliver El-Khatib, one of his closest friends & associates, Oliver come in and played him Abel’s voice one night, the track Birthday Suit, a demo that Abel had done for Drake. Drake admitted in an interview with Stereogum months later that if it weren’t for Oliver he would have never known about him. “That’s the thing about Abel. Sure, he has his moments like, moonwalking in people’s apartments and shit. But he’s just down. He’s so gifted that even when he was performing in that gym, you listen to it and you’re like how did no one in that gym say, who is this kid? He sounds like Michael Jackson. He sounds like Sade.”

On May 19th 2011, Drake tweeted of being in the studio with The Weeknd, “Studio with @theweekndxo… young kings.” A source close to The Weeknd confirmed to Billboard.com that they have been deep in the lab working on Abel’s next mixtape Thursday. The two had finished recording on the 28th of March, a song called “The Zone” produced by Doc Mckinney, it’s lyrics had been tweeted by crew members since early April.
on June 25th The Weeknd put a spin on his mentor Drake’s new record Trust Issues , which itself included a rework of his chorus for DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One. The Weeknd sang his own version of the track over the steely instrumental with Drake getting a nod with a vocal flip, though, from I’m on one to I popped one. No way OVOXO was not a real thing by that time.

On May 24th Drake had announced his second annual OVO Fest Set for July 31 at The Molson Amphitheatre, the event would feature himself, Rick Ross and The Weeknd. Abel opened the 2011 Festival by performing High For This, The Morning, House of Balloons, Wicked Games and The Birds (part 1) in front of the sold-out crowd of 16,000, he seemed pretty comfortable & even though it was hard to fill out that big stadium stage without the benefit of a headliner’s light show, The Weeknd worked well in a gigantic outdoor stadium remembering that this was his second show. Later he joined Drake on stage to perform Trust Issues where Drake re-introduced him again to the crowd giving a short speech about how The Weeknd’s one of the greatest voices he’d ever heard in his entire life and he’s proud that he’s from his city

                      The Mod Club

On 14th July The weeknd announced that he had a surprise for Toronto, that he’ll be performing for the first time at The Mod Club on July 24th & that it was gonna be real Intimate with no media, no guest-list and no Cameras, tickets were sold out in hours. The show was amazing his voice sounded exactly like it did on record which surprised some because more than usual that’s not the case with live performances, fan favorites was his opening High for this, What You Need with Drake’s guitarists Hill Kourkoutis & Adrian Eccleston backing him up and the broken down Coming Down with Abel showing his piano skills while serenading the crowd. A live performance like his, with absolutely no lip-synching or autotune was definitely another game changer from The Weeknd. Drake also showed up cheering off the balcony tweeting later that Abel performed magic and he made him very proud.

                      Thursday

A week after the release of House Of Balloons and it’s massive success, The Weeknd tweeted Two More titles, Thursday & Echoes Of silence, calling them the Balloon trilogy aka The Star wars trilogy of music, announcing that he will be releasing 3 bodies of work in one year & for free, creating a much anticipated hype & ‘Thirst’ for more music, the follow up would be released on a Thursday in the summer & the final chapter in The fall. He released the first single Rolling Stone on May 26th 2011 which sampled Andre Nickatina & San Quinn’s Ayo For Yayo (which was removed from youtube due to violation of content then later put back up again) , followed by the second, The Birds (part 1) on June 16th. Finally on August 19th at 11 pm, The Weeknd released Thursday, the highly anticapted second chapter of the Trilogy, The project this time was produced entirely Doc McKinney & Ill Angelo, and had guest features like OVOXO member Drake & Video Games singer Lana Del Rey on the opener Lonely Star who showed her apprectation & love after the mixtape was released. The artwork was also done by crew member Lamar and featured Abel’s rumored ex-girlfriend Alice Ustinova.

The Knowing, Take Care, & Echoes Of Silence

                      The Knowing

The Weeknd announced that he would be releasing his first official music video for ‘The Knowing‘ back in August. The closing track from the acclaimed mixtape ‘House of Balloons’ and that it would be directed by Paris-based filmmaker Mikael Colombu who had also done Cee-Lo’s Green Bodies , Bilal’s Something to hold on, Lord don’t let it and Onra’s Intro. On November 24th, almost 3 months after, Colombu’s seven minute, mini-film, & very official video for “The Knowing,” hit the internet, a complex but a time traveling, Afrofuturist, science fiction battle of the sexes masterpiece which starred Geena Rocero as the lead girl with Cameo’s from the whole XO gang.

                      Take Care & other projects

After their collaboration on Thursday (The Zone), The Weeknd’s rendition of Trust Issues and forming the movement OVOXO, Drake told Fader TV on Jun 23rd that the 21-year-old singer will be featured on his upcoming album, Take Care, confirming it again a month later backstage at the OVO fest in an Interview with Billboard’s The Juice, “He’s on my album a lot. We really collaborated a lot on this album,” explained Drake.. On Oct 23rd Drake sat down with MTV to discuss the role that The Weeknd would play in his upcoming sophomore album Take Care

''He’s like a writer, collaborator on four songs on my album which I’m very proud of,”. “I usually don’t branch out writing-wise working with other people. I usually like to write all my own stuff, but we get it. We try to tap into the same emotions because we’re from the same city.”
He also spoke on The Weeknd’s current label situation, explaining that the vocalist is tied to his hometown and hasn’t really branched out just yet

“He’s not signed right now, he’s still in the city, he hasn’t left. He’s never been on a plane before. I don’t think he’s ever left the city,” he continued. “He’s a real Toronto kid that’s just one of the most talented people I’ve ever come across.”
On November 1st The Weeknd tweeted the 5 songs he had written & would be featured on, crew love, Shot For Me, Good Ones Go, Practice and The Ride. The first song “Crew Love” Abel had written back in late 2010 and was originally produced by Ill Angelo, a snippet leaked 2 days before the original but when Drake heard it was just a moment for him, as far as the content of the record and what was going on around him in his life and his people, his team and how much he cares for them, he saw it as an important record for him to make and to put on his album ,and the Weeknd was someone that he wanted to include on it, Noah “40” Shebib would re-produce Ill Angelo’s original with the latter still being credited. Abel performed and wrote “Shot For Me”which Drake then re-worked and they both turned Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” into an R&B song, On “The Ride,” the Weeknd contributed in a different way, he blended his vocals into the background of the track while Drake rapped throughout it.The song started out as a vibe, that the Weeknd caught while working with Doc Mckinney and it was just so crazy that Drake wanted to rap on it, they recorded the song on Feb 11th , 2011, one of the very first songs the two did together. a very very smoked out session as Doc described it. Drake says that Abel is the only person he really write’s with and that’s mostly for melodical stuff. On November 7th Drake called up The Weeknd when Flow 93.5 chopped it up with him at their radio station in Toronto, Canada, it was the first Radio Interview he had done.
Other songs/projects The Weeknd worked on was remixes for Florence’s The Machine’s Shake It Out which was released on Sep 27th and produced also by Doc Mckinney & Lady Gaga’s ” Marry The Night ” on November 2nd which was produced by Ill Angelo. He also solely produced a song for Canadian rapper Belly’s Mixtape The Greatest story never had, a track called Downtown which he sampled Lana Del rey’s video games. The Weeknd has also recorded 6 songs with rapper and friend Rich Hil but the songs have yet to be released.

                      Echoes Of Silence

On October 8th 2011 and after two consecutive live performances at the The Guelph Concert Theatre & The London, Ontario Tent party on October 1st & 2nd, The Weeknd released the first single from his anticipated third chapter of the Balloon Trilogy, Echoes Of Silence. The track Initiation was originally produced back in early 2011 by Martin Wong aka DropXlife back when he used to go by the name Pawncho and then was mastered/re-produced by Ill Angelo. It’s name and concept is something Abel had come up with more than 2 years ago and crew members had been tweeting its lyrics from late April 2011. The weeknd announced that he wouldn’t be releasing any more singles from Echoes Of Silence & after rumor got out that it was gonna drop on the shortest day of the year. The Weeknd finally finished the balloon trilogy on the 22nd of December completing the Trilogy. The project was completely produced by Ill Angelo this time except initiation and Dirty Diana and the artwork was done by crew member Lamar featuring model Mikayla Mifsud.
