(roll your weed and pour a drink, cause this is a long post)
Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Fred, some of y'all lilwaynehq.com veterans might remember as 'iWeezy'. I used to be a moderator around these parts until 2010, if I'm not mistaken. I was one of the most active members of the forum, until I became busier and busier and had to turn my full attention to my personal life. I remember this forum had, let's say, "fewer" members back then (Tha Carter III/So Far Gone/Outraged & Underage days), and then it exploded in popularity, becoming the absolute first source for every Young Money fan (and haters/trolls, who wasted our time spamming and cyber-insulting us).
So before I start this "discussion", I would just like to state that we have the amazing Danny M to thank for all this. It's been mind-blowing to witness the growth of this website. I would never imagine that a guy who's the same age as me (born in 1992, if I'm not mistaken) could pull this off by himself. Congratulations brother!
So, first of all, I am and will always be a big Lil Wayne fan. There's a part of me who's always gonna try and defend him even when he makes the most varied musical/career missteps. It was thanks to Lil Wayne's music (and in some way, me being an active user around here) that I became a hip-hop head. I started diggin in the crates and listening to every rapper/hip-hop group under the Sun.
With that being said, Lil Wayne is not my favorite rapper, and I don't consider him the "best rapper alive", although I did believe and promote that catch phrase back in the day.
Aside from Lil Wayne, I am also a Drake, Tyga, and Nicki Minaj fan, I was one of the first (along with the forum users at the time) to believe in their talent before they became internationally successful. By this, I mean that I listened to Drake before So Far Gone, Tyga when he released No Introduction, and Nicki before she started assassinating rappers in their own tracks.
So it saddens me to say that, my friends, right now, I am not enjoying YMCMB music.
Let me explain.
Lil Wayne: Tha Carter IV had some bangers. 6'7'', Megaman, It's Good, Mirror, etc. But overall, it feels like Weezy ran out of stuff to rap about. Everytime I see another new Lil Wayne feature, I can already guess what he's gonna say, and how he's gonna say it. A couple years ago he would surprise us with clever metaphors and stuff, but now, it just feels like filler. I'm glad he has "moved on" from the whole auto-tune thing, and he kinda stopped singing (How To Love will never grow on me), but I'm gonna need a fantastic mixtape or album in the next year to remind myself why I loved his music so much. And please, let those I Am Not A Human Being 2 and Rebirth 2 be just rumours/drugged out Birdman talking. And please, stop dissing Jay-Z/Kanye West for no reason. I don't know what he (and Drake) hope to accomplish with this shit, but he's just losing respect in the hip-hop community. I just wanna see if he's gonna stand behind his words if Jay and Ye respond. If he does, it will be interesting to watch, because I know damn well that Weezy can compete with them lyrically.
And his style decisions? Oh man. I wasn't mad at the whole skinny jeans/face tattoos/lip and eyebrow piercings... But what the fuck is he doing with those scandalous boots on his feet? He has to remind himself that his popularity automatically makes him a trendsetter, and it'd be pretty ridiculous to walk around town and see a bunch of kids wearing that shit.
Other than that, well, I used to skateboard back when I was 12 years old, and I must say that I did more stuff than he be doing in those videos. I hope he steps his game up soon, or stops considering himself a "skateboarder".
(BTW I hope he doesn't hang out with OFWGKTA too much)
Drake: I am an R&B fan, so it bothers me when I read "listening to Take Care will make you have your first period" type comments. Yes, his music is kinda "soft", but I'm not mad at that, because, like I said, I'm an R&B fan (Chris Brown (when he makes R&B) is one of my favorite artists).
What I'm not liking about Drake, is his corniness (I don't know if that's a word. If it isn't, I'll trademark it).
C'mon son. "You gon hype me up and make me catch a body like that"? Really? One of the most important things about a rapper is his credibility, and spitting bars like this when you're popular for being all lovey-dovey and stuff, you lose yours.
And the Common beef? I'm sorry, but I was rooting for Common. Let's see: Common releases a song called "Sweet". People ask him who the song is about, and he says it's about everyone who feels addressed (personally, I think Weezy should have felt more addressed than Drake, since Drake falls in the R&B singer category as well). Drake feels addressed, and says some stuff (during that California concert). The next day, people talk about it with Common, and Common says "yes, if he feels addressed, it's about him". And then, he disses Common on one of the worst tracks of the year so far, Stay Schemin (that beat and hook? one word: struggle). He says "we can't wait to run into you". If I'm not mistaken, they've already ran into each other twice: Grammys, and Sundance, and nothing happened. So once again, loss of credibility.
I like Take Care (although I think Thank Me Later is better), but there are some very corny raps in there. By the way when I say corny, I mean he's trying too hard to be something he is not. It's like if Lil Twist made a song about gang-banging.
Do you.
Tyga: I used to like Tyga because of his versatility. I'm sorry everybody, but Tyga has CLASSICS. Cali Love, My Glory and Dad's Letter are incredible songs, but also very slept-on. So what does Tyga decide to do? Make the music that everybody wants to hear. His last 3 mixtapes are full of that stuff (Lex Luger beats, stripper anthems, songs about money, making money, spending money). I mean, I love Like Me, but that's it.
He is only now getting a real buzz, thanks to Rack City, but that is the main reason why it's taking him almost 4 years to release his second album (and just to give you proof of how much I care about his music, I'm aware of the fact that the album was supposed to be titled The Introduction). Meaning he's making the same type of music that everybody is doing. I would just prefer if he remained an underground rapper, making good, real, and original music. But hey, maybe that's just me. Because I haven't turned the radio on in 7 years, and stopped watching MTV by the time they, well, stopped playing music. So I couldn't care less if your music is popular or not. If it's good and makes its way to the blogs I visit, I don't ask for more.
Bow Wow: I used to listen to Bow Wow before I even knew Lil Wayne (I was very young). And right now, Bow Wow is a joke. He adopted the Tyga formula, club beats, etc. His lyrics are even more repetitive (and with 0 credibility as well), and he's STILL using auto-tune. I swear his latest mixtapes had the same 3 songs all over them. Damn.
This shit saddens me, because I want him (and Tyga) to win, but you're gonna need more than that.
Nicki Minaj: Ahh shit. I don't really wanna get into this, so I'll keep it short: Nicki became successful because people (mainstream audience) hadn't heard a female rapper in a while. And instead of embracing this and keep rapping, you go all Gaga on these motherfuckers. Seriously, Stupid Hoe? Ho.Lee.Shit. The Grammy performance/song? I considered throwing my laptop out the window.
Not only is it bad music, but it's also a bad image for hip-hop. I struggle everyday of my life because I consider myself apart of the culture, so I have to get used to the side-eyes when I walk these streets or ride in my car blasting music thru my speakers. And shit like Nicki's recent music only makes it worse, because people are watching the grammys, and there's this "rapper" who's gonna perform, and people watch that fuckery, and think "God, hip-hop music sucks nowadays".
Nothing more to add. (Except a few amazing femcees, that you guys might want to listen to: Jean Grae, Nitty Scott MC, Rapsody, Boog Brown, L.A. and Marz Lovejoy)
Aside from these artists, nowadays, when I read YMCMB, I automatically think: generic beats, lyrics about the 3 famous topics, and songs who do not become hits. That's why I didn't like the Busta Rhymes signing. Busta delivered 2, maybe 3 classic albums back in the day, and I hate the idea of him changing his style so much from Busta Rhymes- Still Shining - YouTube to Lil Twist - Turn't Up (Explicit) ft. Busta Rhymes - YouTube (yes, I know that in between his style has changed a lot (Touch It, Arab Money) but him being signed to YMCMB means that his style will become more and more generic, seeing how much of YMCMB music sounds nowadays). I'm curious, however, to see how Christina Milian's music will benefit from this. We will finally see the Young Money R&B aproach.
Gudda Gudda, Lil Twist, Jae Millz, Mack Maine, Lil Chuckee... I really don't have much to say. None of them has blown up, and the music really isn't that good, TO ME.
I'm sorry for venting, and thank you for reading this. The reason why I made this post, is to see what the YMCMB fans think of all this fuckery. So please, let me know what's going through your mind after this long ass post.
