If you look down the list of Rappers who won the BET awards. Most of them are commercial artist. The only acception is perhaps Common. To me that tells me that these Hip Hop media arent concerned with preserving the culture as much as they are interested in perpeuating steretypes. I wrote a paper on this issue for my media class if anyone is interested in reading it let me know. In the meantime check out some of these songs;

This song is one of the most realest i heard. The first verse talks about black stereotypes, the second first is about white kids acted black then the last verse he is questioning why are most of his fans white.

This song is by a guy named K-Rino its about the masonic symbolism behind a dollar bill. I should this song to someone yesterday and it blew him away.

This is just a small sample. Imagine if they had these kinds of songs on the radio.

Murs is real, but you can't have this kind of stuff commercial because the majority of people don't want it and it won't sell as well. It's money over quality and we have to live with that as far as right now, though I'm with you on the music.

Well I should know after two more semesters of school. I'm currently the president of the HIp Hop Culture Student Association. I hope to use this forum to promote meaningful hip hop. My hypothesis is that the reason why most people listen to the more stereotype oriented rap is because that is what they are exposed to.

Good luck with that, and this site isn't going to be the place to spread that as I doubt many will give it a chance.

Old rap wasn't boring at all and most of it was raw emotion you could relate to. Now it's about who has the fanciest wordplay. Wayne broke the gimmick with Rebirth and it's my favorite album by him because it has songs with meaning and emotion to them. Being on a major label doesn't help either, they have a big say in what you put out as your final album and they keep these gimmicks for artists cause the label gets more money. It is all about money now and no longer sharing a message of feelings and life to people.
The Carter II was as deep if not more than Rebirth as far as lyrics.

                    Re: Problems With Hiphop

                    In my oppinion ..

People are hating. I am seventeen and explored a great deal of Hip-Hop. Since practically birth. Most of my life is based from it. I see Hip-Hop today as the evolved-form of Hip-Hop from yesterday. It's modern-day society now. The future. Wayne and other rappers (can name a few..) who stick to that, and does well on holding the belt. Hip-Hop ain't making a 'real song' on a grimey beat about poverty and shit in the hood. It may have started that way, but that's just it. And I loved it.
I admit. But I do admit I accept the 'new age' of rap. Listening to this rappers are using more styles, longer and more sophistacationg words. More trippy and clever similies and metaphors. Even have lines with multiple meaning, or saying a word the wrong way to change the whole meaning to a line. And the use of adlibs.. give songs emotions or a certain feel.
That put emphasis on what they tryna say. But I ain't saying ALL is good..

                    Rappers of Today/Tommorow
                    -Lil' Wayne
                    -Drake
                    -Kid CuDi
                    -Blu
                    -The Cool Kids (Underrated)
                    -Curren$y
                    -Wiz Khalifa
-Kanye (possibly.. like during his Late Registration/Graduation phase)

                    Rappers of Yesterday
                    -2Pac
                    -Big L
                    -Biggie
                    -N.W.A
                    -Wu-Tang
-Bone Thugs -N- Harmony (East 1999 days)
Free 30 Minutes to New Orleans
