i'd think doing what the best/most successful lyricist do would help you improve.
there comes a point where u can be too lyrical and the majority of music listeners dont want that.
i think like wayne put just the right amount of lyrical needed to make the song good, and not overly lyrical, yet still not below average or too simple.
but then again, it all goes back to what you consider lyrical.
some say its lyrics with "meaning",
but i'd say its witty/creative ways of writing lyrics, but...........
Put them both together, and you've got top notch shit.
J. cole is good for the latter example.
but wayne can say some off da wall goofy shit, somewhat creative, and i'd say it's still lyrical.

you can even say you sold drugs once you a phamacist, and rap about that shit truthfully,
and it wont be negative, 'cuz its drugs thats good for you.
shit , i never thought of it that way cvs, rite-aid, wal-greens , etc got traphouses in da back

Kendrick is a little complexed with his lyrics..its like he isn't thinking like a normal human being
J Cole has a way of making a song that is real as fuck and still lyrical..When I get too deep it's hard for me to focus on witty lines or metaphors and shit of that sort...
Nas is just great....
I guess their flow has alot to do with how they pull off these verse lyrically..Mississippi x California x North Carolina
